River Herd was formed by the black foal of Anok, Star, at the end of Starfire and became an official herd by the events of Stormbound. Unlike the other herds both former and current, instead of having an over-stallion or an army, River Herd has a council instead to make decisions in a group.
During the events of Landfall, River Herd joined together with the pegasi of Mountain Herd, Desert Herd, Jungle Herd, and Snow Herd that had agreed to abandon their territories to hide from Nightwing the Destroyer in the forests of the Trap to form the United Army. This army would fight against Nightwing and the two armies hunting for Star, the Black Army and the Ice Warriors, forming a Grand Council made out of River Herd's medicine mare, Sweetroot; Star's milk dam, Silverlake (formerly Sun Herd's lead mare, Silvercloud); Birchcloud, former lead mare of Mountain Herd; Ashrain; and Redfire, former captain of Desert Herd.
River Herd was temporarily disbanded during Windborn when Nightwing kidnapped the herd and formed Wind Herd after settling in the Flatlands. The herd most likely rejoined when all the pegasi (minus Stormtail's group) all decided to live in peace.

Pegasi of River Herd come in all shades of feathers and coat coloring due to the pegasi in its herd descending from five of the original herds (Sun Herd, Mountain Herd, Snow Herd, Desert Herd, and Jungle Herd).
