Lightfeather is a small white mare who originally belonged to Snow Herd before she and her mother were driven out by Petalcloud. Lightfeather was adopted into Sun Herd after her mother was killed. Years later, Lightfeather was chosen by The Hundred Year Star to bare the Black Foal; her only colt, Star, who's birth killed her.

Pre-Series[]
Birth and Banishment From Snow Herd[]
Lightfeather was born in the north as the illegitimate foal of the over-stallion, Icewing. He was mates with Petalcloud at the time and sired Lightfeather with an unknown mare. Petalcloud found out and drove both Lightfeather and her dam out of Snow Herd.
Adoption Into Sun Herd[]
Several days later, a Sun Herd patrol found a trembling Lightfeather hiding in a tree among the north most forests of their territory after a bear killed her mother. They flew her back to the herd, where the lead mare, Silvercloud, took pity on her and adopted her. Lightfeather eventually adjusted to the new climate and befriended a young filly named Dawnfir, who eventually became her best friend.

Lightfeather is a sweet, kind and compassionate mare, with a sensitive nature (in a good way).
Lightfeather is good and well cared mother to Star. She even was able to give up her life to save him.

- Lightfeather is Star's dam, and died shortly after her colt was born.
- Her dam was killed by a bear.
- Her herd of origin is Snow Herd, and she is Icewing's filly, meaning Icewing is Star's grandsire and is his only female descendant.
- She's Frostfire's half-sister, as they both had the same sire, Iceriver.
- When Star was born dead, she nursed him back to life by rubbing his chest and biting his ear really hard.
- Lightfeather whispered secrets into Star's ears, which helps him later throughout the books. Star often recalls her voice in his ears, repeating her instructions, "heal them."
- The stories about Lightfeather are Morningleaf's favorites.
- When she was with foal, she was abandoned by the herds and was forced to migrate by herself through a thunderstorm. She was abandoned because she was pregnant with the black foal and she did not have a mate.
- During Lightfeather's foaling Dawnfir and Silverlake watched her from out of view sight.
